John and list,
John, as I said before: whenever you change the hardware, JAWS will ask you to reactivate it. This is because the auth code relies on hardware. If a hardware change occvffs (for example, replacing a CD-ROM drive or adding additional memory), JAWS will no longer work with the current activation because JAWS sees that it has different hardware, thus different locking code from the previous hardware. You'll need to activate it in order for JAWITH to adopt to new hardware (that is, you'll need to reactivate it in order to get a new code based on the new hardware locking code/fingerprint). Hope it makes sense to you now.
Cheers,
Joseph

What the heck are you talking about? I *am*
living by their rules. It's not
as if I have a choice. I can't force FS to
change their authorization
scheme just for lil' old me.

All I'm doing is expressing my opinion about
that scheme. Do you have a
problem with that? The topic came up. I
pointed out some serious problems
with the new scheme. Why in the world would
you have a problem with that?

Sheesh!

Exactly, if you don't like the way it works
then don't use it. But if you
are going to use it then you live by their
rules period, end of story.

For one thing, it's not a problem. It's by
design. For a second thing,
if you're going to be using it, you'd darned
well better read up on it.
Third, whether you or anyone else thinks
it's stupid is irrelevant, this
is the way it is. Ranting and stamping your
foot isn't going to change
it. Your software would be more expensive
if there were no
copy-protection scheme associated with it.
Now I'll leave you to hold
your breath until your face turns blue.

Reading up on the authorization scheme makes
it clear that this will
happen,
the universe is unfolding as it should. FS
is also extremely good about
resetting authorizations very quickly, no
questions asked.

1. I shouldn't have to "read up on the
authorization scheme".
2. I already said i understand how it works
*technically* -- my point was
that i think it's bogus.
3. It's ridiculous to have to get
reauthorized just because i swapped out
my
CD-ROM drive. I don't care how many ways
you spin that, it's still
stupid.
4. Though FS is fairly quick about handing
out reauthorizations, while
I'm
waiting, , I'm stuck either without a CD-ROM
drive or without jaws.

I'm not necessarily saying the old scheme
was better. That one had it's
problems too. I think when I'm paying $1000
for a piece of software, it
ought not have a problem like this.

FS is so wooried that their software will be
pirated that they're turning
off paying customers like myself. I now
have a Macintosh and am learning
to
use VoiceOver. VoiceOver is already almost
good enough for me to switch
to
full time. I'm hoping the next release puts
it over the top. Second, I
have
begun to install Window-Eyes on all PCs I
set up along with Jaws. That
way
once in a while, I can give Window-eyes a
spin. Finally, I have a linux
machine and am about to give Orca a try.

PS: VoiceOver and orca are free.
