question about jaws reading icons in windows messenger

I know this is not a major issue or necessity, but I'm just curious because
in the past Jaws has done this but now it isn't reading these. When my kids
or other sighted people would send, through windows messenger, one of those
icons like the smiley faces or the animals or whatever, Jaws would read the
icon that was sent. But now the icon comes back as a blank and I just
wondered why it no longer reads the pictures. Using jaws 6 with XP home.
