one thing I know may have happened is that for some reason, putting the installer on the desktop may have fouled things. I know this was the case in some earlier versions so it may well have been what caused the problem. The cure is not so simple. Windows me needs to be repaired and for this sight is required as far as I know or at least for the method of putting the windows me cd in, starting the pc and if it is a bootable cd and the cd is searched for in the boot path, run repair when the menu comes up. Other than that, there are several other things to try. One would be if she has an emergency disk which every one who uses windows me should have, she could put that in the a drive and run setup from the windows me cd to fix the problem. Trying another method that of pressing f8 during boot to see if a menu will come up from which she could get into safe mode from which she might be able to do a repair is another option. This may also be coincidental. I have seen viri kill computers in this way so the best solution may just be o wipe the pc and start over. For this, you need a system floppy that allows you to run cds like the emergency disk in the earlier option and just tell windows to reinstall but first, change the name of the windows folder to something like windows-old so that windows will be completely freshly installed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "tony" <tsantiag@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, December 21, 2003 8:48 AM Subject: problem installing jfw5.0 Hi guys, I have a friend who has a computer running Windows ME. She downloaded jfw 5.0 from the Freedom scientific website and tried to install it. Well, she double-clicked the icon on the desktop, saw an hour glass and heard the computer rumbling. Here comes the good part. She then saw all of her desktop icons disappear, all except the system files. The computer stopped rumbling, the icons were gone so she rebooted. She the got a message saying, invalid system disk, try another and hit any key to continue. Well, there was no disk in the floppy drive or in the cdrom drive, so she tried to reboot again and got the same thing. Windows will not start. Has anyone ever had this problem with a downloaded version of jfw? If anyone can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated.
