George,

Okay, I have the answer, thanks to Patricia pointing the way.

Outlook 2007.
Ctrl 2 for Calendar
Alt v for view
Current view submenu
Arrow to "all Appointments"
Now you have a list of everything.

Alt v again
Arrange by submenu
Check Date

Now it's sorted oldest to newest.

at this point you could arrow to the oldest one you want to keep and 
highlight all those above that point with Ctrl home and delete.

Caveat: Don't delete those recurring appointments, which are often some of 
the oldest dates you have.

Then set your view back to Day/week/month view.
Then f6 to switch over to the correct pane

yes, it just displays the active appointments and anything before today's 
date is not displaied
