Did you try copying and pasting your .doc files into a word document? Judith

I am sorry. they are .doc files and do open in word 2003. I did check before I started asking these questions, but I was unclear when I started this thread.

Oh, that's right! She keeps calling them "text files," and has never said
they were Word documents. Maybe that's worth asking.

Alicia,

Are you sure these files are opening in Word? If they are .txt files, they
would ordinarily open in either NotePad or WordPad, depending on the length.
Neither of these programs allow more than one file to be opened at a time.

There is no error message, but when I go to open a second word file the
first document I had opened closes and Word will not allow me to have more
than one open at a time.

Well, that doesn't sound like any challenge to your computer's memory at
all. How about the error message?I should say, as Jerry and others have,
that I keep several docs open in Word often.

The worksheet files are 54.4 kb and the textbook file is 65.78 kb. I have
a
machine that is running 512 of RAM. I know I need to toss in another
stick
because I bought this computer a year ago and I have not added any memory
sticks to it since I bought it.

Hi Alicia,

By "files," I assume you mean "documents." You're not wrong calling
them
files, it's just that "document" is the operative term when discussing
Word
in this way.

That shouldn't be any problem at all. I don't know if there's something
unusual about the types of documents you mention-- worksheets and a
textbook-- but the only thing I can even imagine is that this textbook
is
really enormous, consisting of so many megabytes that you don't have
enough
RAM on your computer to have it open and anything else at the same time?
But in a reasonably capable system these days, that doesn't seem likely.

What sort of error message do you get when you try to open these things
together? Also, just to be sure, how much RAM do you have on your PC?
Before you let anyone influence you to get into a big project of
inspecting
and then deleting all sorts of running processes and this and that, as
someone is likely to suggest, I hope you find another approach, first.
So
let's start with error messages, file size (see? "file" is the
pertinent
word in this case) and RAM?

Hello, Everyone:

was under the impression that Word would allow you to have more than one
file open at a time; however, it will not allow me to have my worksheets
open and my textbook open. They are both Word files. Does anyone know if
Word will allow two files to be opened?
