I think this (to use 97) is a very poor recommendation.

For one thing, how are you supposed to handle documents created with
later versions?

Next, why should you do without all the additional features that have
been added since then simply because you don't want to buy more memory
or a faster processor (there's no other reason for the report of
sluggishness).

Lastly, look at what ebooks and tutorials are available for teaching
yourself Word; look how much more is available for the later versions
than for 97.
