tom,

i just made a shortcut for word pad on my desktop and it opened the word pad
app.

throw the one for word pad away on your desktop and then go to start
programs accesseries and arrow to wordpad and hit the apps key and arrow to
send to and right arrow and arrow to desktop as shortcut and hit enter and
it is there.
