losing sound

Hi folks,
using xp and jaws 5.
My kid is using something which is capturing the sound system and preventing me
getting any sound from jaws and narrator. Even when I turn off the computer and
switch on again, I get no sound at log on from either prog. If I can get to the
desktop, I can use quickmixin to reset and I get back, but, I need something
more reliable if poss.
Emma has her own account, but even that doesn't prevent the silence on ours.
