I've seen the same behavior. And I use the same workaround -- arrow up/down.

Sometimes when I am in a folder and type the first few letters of the
file name to jump down to that file so I can open it, Jaws does not
give me speech output on the file name. When I asked my Jaws teacher
about this, he said to just down arrow and up arrow back to the same
spot, and that works. Also Jaws key + num pad 8 seems to give me a
read-out. But I was wondering if this happens to other people and
also if the number of letters I type or how fast I type them makes a
difference in how frequently the problem would happen. I am a fast
typist in general.
The only thought I had was maybe Jaws doesn't speak the title because
it wants to make sure you're really done typing? But it does skip
down the screen and focus in the right place, it just isn't giving me
any speech.
