All you're doing is describing variants of the process. Not that you're
wrong, it's just that there are all sorts of rename commands you could give,
depending upon which part or parts of the file name or file names, plural,
you wanted to change. so the below isn't quite a correction of what I
described, so much as an example of various ways to designate different
changes in different positions within the file name.

But, in any case, it was a nice, powerful command, and as we're all
agreeing, a damn shame that MS didn't figure out a way to translate to
Windows in some way. I'm no programmer, but I'd guess it could be done, if
someone had wanted to bother.

Ah, well. At least Bill and Melinda are making a dent in world health
problems, and that's nice. If irrelevant in this context... :-)

If I may further clarify the DOS REN command

Syntax
REN FROM*.* TO*.*

Note the *, star, in the from and to names. Whatever value you used for
"FROM" followed by anything would be changed to "TO" followed by the same
thing. In the above syntax all filetypes would be renamed but by specifying
a filetype in the from file name only those files would be renamed and their
filetype would be preserved.

Ah, right. I just used the move command for it... same thing when it
was all said and done. Unfortunately, though, the general consensus
that the same functionality isn't present in Windows is accurate.
Point and click means you're removing specific words from files one
file at a time, unfortunately. You can thank Microsoft for this long
awaited waste of time.
