why not use 5.844?  Just curious.  Not all jaws are created equal?  I'm not
sure what that means.

All JAWS are not created equally. I did what Margaret suggested and, by
gum, I now can find out how many messages I have.
The status was already checked but, for some reason, it now works?
I have JAWS 5.0.62, XP Home, Outlook 2003.

Margaret,
Thanks for your help. However, both status bars are checked. At this
point I really don't have an idea of what to do. When I press insert
numpad3, Jaws is saying "jaws jfw-outlook express." Then jaws speaks the
current time. Its really crazy to me. I really appreciate your concern.
