Michael, I'm going to copy the instructions given by a former and much missed lister, Allan Wong. For clarification, I kept the questions that led to his answers. I think he addresses your concern. Question. When I open the Start Menu, and then Programs (Classic mode), the list doesn't seem to be all there at first. I was thinking there was a setting to be changed that would fix this, but not sure. I have made all the recommended changes for XP with Jaws. Allan Wong. go to control panel and hit letter "t" for "taskbar and start menu", press enter. press ctrl+tab to start menu tab, make sure the first option is selected at "classic start menu", now press tab once for "customize..." and hit spacebar. press tab until "start menu settings-treeview" and press arrow down to the last selection call "use personalized menu", make sure it is off, if it is on, press spacebar to turn it off. press ok button to close and press apply button to activate the changes and finally press enter at the ok button. now, your start menu list will be all appear. Follow-up question. I find that the list under the Windows Programs menu takes time to appear. I don't know why. A few programs come up immediately, but it takes several seconds for the entire list to follow. I wait and arrow up and down so I can tell when the remaining programs have elected to show themselves. Allan. Please make sure the option "use personalized menu" is select at off. to make this changes, refer to my previous posting. after you turn the "use personalized menu" off, your start/program menu list will appear as normal. Reply. This works. Many thanks. I figured this was a limitation I had to live with. One small note. There is no "Apply" button here. I checked twice. But pressing "OK" after the selection and again at the end of the start menu sequence buttons seems to hold the changed setting. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Michael Arnowitt Sent: Tuesday, November 23, 2010 9:51 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: jaws key + windows key + F4 Dave, the more I think about it, I'm pretty sure when I did this jaws + windows + F4 keystroke I probably did restart Jaws and that's when I noticed the changes. I probably miswrote earlier. Restarting Jaws is so automatic I guess I managed to forget I had even done it. I have a desktop with XP and Jaws 12. When this keystroke combo killed Jaws I heard a cute sound effect like a brzzap on a cartoon. I think I've got everything back to normal now post-crash except the Start Menu. If anyone knows where the Start Menu appearance can be customized, if at all, in XP please let me know as it may have gone back to some default or its placement on the screen got slightly changed. Michael Dave wrote: Michael, If you're using a laptop, you may have accidentally used the Fn (Function) key and adjusted your screen settings. Insert+Windows+F4 should have definitely shut down JAWS 11 or 12. Don't know if it works on older versions, or not. The first thing I noticed was it changed the insert to overwrite characters instead of pushing them to the right, I was able to get this back. Secondly, the Jaws voice suddenly got very low and slow and the key interrupt was flipped from my preference, I was able to get this back to normal with a couple of restarts. The only thing I haven't been able to recover from yet are that it changed the visual appearance of my desktop and start menu slightly, moving a few desktop items a bit to the left partly off the screen I think and adding a visually distracting sidebar with a Microsoft logo to the start menu column. This probably isn't really a topic of much interest to the list, but if anyone has any ideas here they can write me off-list. I checked the screen resolution and it didn't seem to have changed. Probably not a great idea to try out key combinations you don't know what they do. Had a rare moment of curiosity.
