Hi Kathy,

ZoomText and Jaws are compatible (one of our staff has been running them
together on the same workstation for years) but they are made by two
different manufacturers, AiSquared and Freedom Scientific. The two are not
"combined" but may be run concurrently on a Windows PC.

Freedom Scientific, back when it was Henter Joyce, purchased MAGic from
another company and started tuning to fit with JAWS. Early-on that did not
work too well, but the two are supposed to do well together now. ZoomText,
on the other hand, has been mostly compatible with JAWS all along, although
there is a sequence, where one had to be started and turned off first, to
make sure they didn't argue over computer resources. There was also a short
period of time when all the manufacturers sorted out their products'
compatibility with Microsoft's "display chain methodology" (DCM) in
WindowsXP. ZoomText is currently a little bit more robust than MAGic, but
not by much really, and the product pricing is pretty close between the two
for their similar "flavors".

Both companies offer free demo downloads.
MAGic, version 9.0 can be downloaded at:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_downloads/magic.asp If you want a demo
CD of MAGic, you need to call Freedom Scientific and they'll get it to you
within 30 days.
ZoomText, version 8.1 is at
http://www.aisquared.com/Products/ZoomText8_mag_reader/FreeTrial/Z8FreeTrial
.htm You can order a ZoomText demo CD of this same location and they ship it
pretty quick.
However, you may be able to get either demo CD from a local supplier more
quickly.

I hope that helps a bit,
JamesJ

Hello Listers,

A student of mine has asked if the newer version of JFW is combined with
Zoomtext.
I didn't think I'd read this on this list, but perhaps someone will know how
that concept/rumor might have started.

Thanks very much.
