I think you can disable scann in color. That should speed up scanning.
How would we know if we are scanning something in normal text?

I have JFW5.1 with Windows XP, OpenBook 7, and 384 meg of ram, an Epson
1660 scanner. OpenBook reads/recognizes in less than 30 seconds.
If you are working with clean material, you will want scanning set to
normal, not automatic.
