yes and no is the answer.

nero can not copy dvd that are copy protected.

just about all of your dvd movies use some type of copy protection scheme.

so those will not copy.

but it will copy a dvd you created your self.

nero or any program sold in the u s is not allowed to over come copy
protection schemes.

digital rights management law prevents this.
1 2 3 studios did sel such a program until a judge took it off the market.

this was unfortunate in my view because they did so in what i considerred a
responsible way that prevented theft.

when you maid your back up with 1 2 3 studio x copy it imbedded your serial
number into the dvd copy so it could be traced back to you.
so if you gave it away or sold it you could get into trouble.
that meant you could back up your dvd or software on dvd for your own use.

but the judge ad a differant view than i did and deemed it illegal.
lol.

i am not going to tell you what the results of the judges decission where,
lets say it was not good for hollywood.

now realize 3 steps exist to copying a dvd.

step one decripting the disk.

software that does so is deem illegal.

step 2.
trimming the disk down to size.
a. trimming.
b. compression.

step 3 the burn.
nero does step 3 but not the 2 prior steps.

its unfortunate nero does not have provisions for step 2 for those small
numbers of dvd movies that are not copy protected.

let me explain step 2.

dvd movies come in many sizes.

the plus r or minus r dvd blanks only hold 4.7 gig.

the dvd movie that you buy at the store can hold as much as 9 gig.

so how to get it to fit to a 4.7 blank.

you do so by eliminating things like foreign language tracks and extra
takes or bloopers included on the dvd.

if it is still to big you compress the disk.

so nero does not allow one easy tools for eliminating those tracks not
required for watching nor does it do compression.

many programs do have these features but not nero.

now realize a new size of blank now exist that holds 8.5 gig.

first your dvd burner must support this new format and size.

so must the dvd burning software.
nero does.

if it does you can burn most dvd movies to that size disk with no
compression or trimming.

sounds good doesn't it?

well just one problem those blanks cost 12 dollars for double capacity dvd
blanks.

so waiting on the prices to come down to make that more affordable.

standard dvd blanks are less than a dollar a piece.

hope that answers your question.

one more thing do not think any major cd/ dvd burning package has these
features.
such features are found in dvd specific copy programs.

the other big thing about nero and e z cd are neither support dvd audio.

dvd audio allows one to burn 4 gig of music to a single 4.7 gig dvd blank.

double that on a double capacity.

translation, the entire rolling stones collection on a single dvd double
capacity disk in its original wav format.

so most groups would only need one dvd disk to store all their music.

the down side to dvd audio is the cd db data base will not work with this.

still dvd audio would be a nice feature added to nero not to mention the
other major packages.
