jaws 5.1 and windows messenger

Hi,
Though in the past I've seen this behavior with Jaws 5.0 and msn messenger
versions 5 and 6 I'd never seen it in windows messenger 4.7 or 5. However,
here it manifests. After a few sends back and forth in conversation window
suddenly instead of speaking the in coming message automatically Jaws just
says blank blank blank whether a message comes in or you use the ` key to
read previous message. Nothing seems to rectify this problem nor can I pin
down an event or cause for this to suddenly occur.
By the way this has manifested after doing a merge settings and after a
clean uninstall and reinstall
Has anyone else encountered this issue as yet?
