Just because a program isn't running doesn't mean it isn't messing with things.
If this worked before you downloaded the google whatever, remove it.  Esp. with
a slightly older but functioning computer, I have one of those, you will notice
that anything new runns slower and the newer it is, the more something gets
screwed up.  I'd get the System Security Suite from the jfwlite site and remove
things you don't need esp. the bhos which pop up in the list.  That caused a
performance problem on my P400 with 384MB of ram.  You can also see if your
soundcard has updated drivers.   Oh I didn't even ask what operating system you
have?  That might be the problem.
