how to make a dvd

Hi listers, I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem:
i have a dvd writer. i am trying to use it in order to put my video recordings
on a dvd in order to play them on my home dvd player but no luck so far. How
can i achieve this? what software do i need?
p.s, the material i have is in "wmv" format. do i need to convert them to any
particuler format in order to make dvd?
