You guys, actually I think this was all more of an issue in windows 98. I
also don't think there is much need for creating the shutdown shortcut now.
There might still be a few reasons for it, to shut down remote servics, or
if a sighted person is using the quick launch toolbar and wants it right
there, or other such things.
Even this article at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shutcut.php states that the preferred method now is
in the power options in control panel (if your hardware supports it).

actually? first there's no real trick involved hear,

umm, the only reason I could think of creating a shortcut for shutting down
the machine is? if you lost the voice of your screen reader, and? you had no
way of restarting the speech program.
however, sometimes when the computer freezes, even a created shortcut won't
activate, so holding the shutdown button on the tower is your only means.

heck, a couple of keystrokes is fine for me.

David,
As a couple of us have asked already, what's the need for a hotkey to shut
down one's computer? What is so difficult or time-consuming about exiting
an application or two and just shutting down with two or three key presses
*without* creating some sort of macro to do it? Sincere question. Not
sarcastic. Please explain what the need for such a trick is. thank you.

Shortcuts for shutting/restarting windows XP

You can create a shortcut icon, you can assign a keystroke that will

shutdown windows.

Minimize to your desktop and press f5 to unselect any item on your desktop.

Press the applications key and enter on new.

Enter on shortcut.

Type in "SHUTDOWN -s -t 01" without the quotation marks

and click NEXT.

Now type in a name for your shortcut.

You can name it anything you want then click finish.

You will now see a new

icon on your desktop with the name you gave it.

Press alt enter on the icon and give it a shortcut keystroke.

When you want to shut down

your computer just press your hot-key.

If you would like to create a shortcut for restarting your computer, use
the same steps above, Just replace the first S with a R.

SHUTDOWN -r -t 01

However, sometimes when the computer freezes, or, jaws stops talking
completely, the user can press and hold the shutdown button on the tower,
for perhaps 5 seconds or so, and the machine will do a total shutdown.
