Aha. Okay, I knew the perils of doing the latter. I mean the long
hold-down. And you're saying that if you have it set to shut down with a
button push, then only a brief push is required, much like the way you push
it to boot up? Darn. When I push the power button in an emergency
situation where my system has locked up and I can't exit my running
applications or anything else, the conservative button-push doesn't seem to
do anything. Do you think that if I pushing it briefly, but then waited a
while to see what happened, that the computer would go through some sort of
orderly shutdown process? Am I not waiting long enough to see if a brief
button push does anything? Know what I'm saying?
Thanks As you see, my question is entirely sincere, and I was also being
sincere in my earlier request for Allan to clarify what he said. I hope
Allan understood this, too; I think he's a generous contributor to the list,
a high-quality list member. There's someone here who started flaming me in
private email for asking someone to explain this distinction between a quick
button press and holding the button, as you're doing. I'm just mentioning
this in case I've done anything unkind or undiplomatic, which I hope isn't
the case.
But that isn't your problem. Sorry. Just tired of getting slammed by this
person, who's taken it upon himself to be my own private al qaeda suicide
martyr for some reason.

If you have it set to shutdown in advanced power options then just press the
power button shortly. Holding the power button down longer forces the
computer to power down without a safe shut down. It's somewhat like pulling
the plug but not quite as nasty.
