Actually, Will, you are correct in saying that when the option ot start JAWS automatically "which is found both in the basics dialog under the options menu in the JAWS main application window and also in the startup wizzard, located in the help menu) is the same as running it as a service. To verify that this is indeed the case, look at the Freedom Scientific website under support and technical support bulletins, since they use the two interchangeably.

Curtis,

First, I'm surprised to hear that you ran the installation file and weren't
presented with the repair and modify options when it found that Jaws was
already on your computer. I'm assuming you didn't uninstall Jaws before
trying this, of course! That is, as I think you know, the way to get to the repair function for a couple of versions now. There's an explanation of why
it's not done through the old Start Menu method, but someone else here may
remember the explanation. I've forgotten, myself.

So that is one thing worth thinking about. Second, I thought that placing
Jaws in the Startup Group, which is done by choosing that item from the
options on the main Jaws window (start Jaws automatically, or however it's
worded, now) *did* mean that you were making Jaws run as a service. I
thought that was synonymous with saying something is in the startup group.

Maybe I'm wrong, in which case I'm sure someone will explain the
distinction. But all of this sounds extremely frustrating and a little bit
odd.

I hope someone can offer something helpfully diagnostic.

My wife has a new computer, an AMD dual core 2.3Ghz with 2 gigs of
ram. Jfw will not come up talking, no matter the start up setting. I
re-installed, (looking for repair which did not exist for some
reason), even running the downloaded installation without that option
shown to me, so un-installed, and re-installed, keeping her settings
for apps, etc. Still, the program, though it's loaded, will not come
up talking. It is using the standard Eloquence that comes with it by
default, so, any more ideas? If I am told how, I will set it up to
run as a service, but need to know how to do that.
