Hi, I actually saw your message about your log-on situation after I sent my thoughts to you. Anyway, I don't know much about Windows in terms of how programmes are started due to priority levels. I guess though that by default they'd all run as normal priority unless otherwise specified? I don't know. It could just be that Windows is coded to load programmes at startup in a certain or even random order. Maybe I should ask the tech lists regarding this, purely for my own education.

chris, I'm sorry. I thought the way I expressed what I said might have made itobvious that I'm running my own PC as Admin. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Ofcourse I don't have a log-on dialogue.Second, do you mean something specific by saying maybe it's something aboutthe interaction of the scanner and Jaws? I don't mean do you know exactly what this would be, but do you know some established principle of priority that may be at work? It's just an ordinary USB scanner, nothing unusual. Hi, two things I can think of. You don't have any accounts other than your administrative account, meaning Windows won't display the Windows Log On dialogue box. The other could be the scanner/JAWS combination, but since I don't have this combination to test with, I can't prove the latter. Hope this helps though. -- Chris Hallsworth Derbyshire, UK E-mail christopherhallsworth71@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx MSN ch9675@xxxxxxxxxxx Skype chrishallsworth7266 Website http://www.chrishallsworth.co.nr Klango chrishallsworth----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, July 27, 2008 10:37 PM Subject: Re: getting jaws to come up talking.Chris, P.S. I just looked in my startup group list where you said to look, and allthat's there is my Microtek scanner that I use with Open Book, running itsself-test. Now, I don't know if this contradicts your definition or experience, but that scanner test runs *before* Jaws speaks, and also my Desktop is fully up and visible before Jaws speaks, also. I'm partial, obviously. Does this contradict anything in your definition? Or does it imply that, all the while, Jaws is indeed loading but is hesitating to announce that it's ready until the scanner test has finished and the Desktop screen elements are all in place? is fully on the screen? Thanks. fininsyedsannaobbvioslyu.----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Hallsworth" <christopherhallsworth71@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, July 27, 2008 2:22 PM Subject: Re: getting jaws to come up talking. Hi all, when a programme runs as a service, it runs before Windows even logs you into your account should you have a log in dialogue box. This is why JAWS and any other commercial screen reader can speak or braille from within the Windows log on dialogue box. This is not the case when a programme runs from the startup group, as these are executed after Windows is loaded andyou're on the desktop. FYI, the startup group is the startup folder, foundunder Start Menu, All Programmes, Startup. Hope this helps. -- Chris Hallsworth Derbyshire, UK E-mail christopherhallsworth71@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx MSN ch9675@xxxxxxxxxxx Skype chrishallsworth7266 Website http://www.chrishallsworth.co.nr Klango chrishallsworth----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, July 27, 2008 10:06 PM Subject: Re: getting jaws to come up talking.Curtis, First, I'm surprised to hear that you ran the installation file and weren't presented with the repair and modify options when it found that Jaws was already on your computer. I'm assuming you didn't uninstall Jaws before trying this, of course! That is, as I think you know, the way to get to the repair function for a couple of versions now. There's an explanation of why it's not done through the old Start Menu method, but someone else here may remember the explanation. I've forgotten, myself. So that is one thing worth thinking about. Second, I thought that placingJaws in the Startup Group, which is done by choosing that item from the options on the main Jaws window (start Jaws automatically, or however it's worded, now) *did* mean that you were making Jaws run as a service. I thought that was synonymous with saying something is in the startup group. Maybe I'm wrong, in which case I'm sure someone will explain the distinction. But all of this sounds extremely frustrating and a little bit odd. I hope someone can offer something helpfully diagnostic.----- Original Message ----- From: "Curtis Delzer" <curtis@xxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, July 27, 2008 1:54 PM Subject: getting jaws to come up talking. My wife has a new computer, an AMD dual core 2.3Ghz with 2 gigs of ram. Jfw will not come up talking, no matter the start up setting. I re-installed, (looking for repair which did not exist for some reason), even running the downloaded installation without that option shown to me, so un-installed, and re-installed, keeping her settings for apps, etc. Still, the program, though it's loaded, will not come up talking. It is using the standard Eloquence that comes with it by default, so, any more ideas? If I am told how, I will set it up to run as a service, but need to know how to do that.
