1. normally, if you take off the power cable, the laptop shouldn't be turn off.
if this happen, your laptop battery life maybe over.
2. how old is your laptop?
3. do you need to put the power cable on each time you turn the laptop on?

the keystroke to read the battary status with jaws is "JawsKey + Shift + b"

It should tell you in the systems tray with insert+f11. Mine always says the
percentage of charge the battery is showing.
