Thank you for responding to my enquiry. I wasn't aware of this add on. I'm
sorry though, but I don't quite understand what you mean or at least what it
is I need to do when you mention the "sourcefile in the xpi-file" Could you
please elaborate?

The Add On "Popup Sound" will help you to solve this problem.
You can find it here: <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/634>
This Add On is currently not compatible with Firefox 3.0, it only works
till version 2.0.0.14 but you can patch one sourcefile in the xpi-file
to make it work with the new Fox.
