dsl wireless modem

Hello,
I am using windows xp sp2 and jfw6.0
I just installed a new westtell versalink 327,wireless modem/router for my
dsl service.
It is defaulted to have the hardware firewall disabled.
Has anyone set this hardware firewall up using jaws? If something that you
need is blocked, such as anti-virus update, is blocked, how difficult is it
to correct?
I don't plan to make any changes until I can have all settings written down
so it can be restored without having to call for help.
