The system is very secure due to being a government department and doesn’t let
us have access to task manager etc. I just restart every now and then but it’s
far from ideal. Blazie etc have been involved and nothing they can do about it,
although things seem to go wrong when there are network issues. My profile is a
roaming one on a server so not sure if that makes a difference.

When I've encountered problems like this on an XP pro system and I can predict
they will happen at least once a day, I take some precautions when there's a
lull in the action. I go into the Windows task manager and close down JAWS. In
my case, I also close down Outlook 2003 because it is such a memory hog and,
like JAWS, just keeps ratcheting up the memory use. I give them both a few
seconds rest, then bring them back up.

If the lull is even longer, I'll simply reboot. this gives everything a fresh
start and reduces the chances that the system will lock up when I can't afford
it to.

Tried all that Dave. It’s all fine on my home PC with Windows 7 but at work
where we are running XP Pro sometimes I just lose it all together. Very
difficult with my job as I’m interviewing people most of the day, need the
computer, and because of the speed of the PC, network, security bits and pieces
your talking about five or six minutes at least to get logged back on again,
not to mention the work lost.

Peter,

Wait 20 to 30 seconds after killing JAWS before attempting to load again. It
needs to "flush" from the system.

Yeh works for me too. The difficulty then comes when JAWS completely refuses
to come back up again.

When Jaws freezes, i.e. Jaws key + F4 does not quit, I try the Jaws key +
windows + F4 to force Jaws to exit. That usually works for me.

?When my computer freezes I always go to the task manager, processes and
press j for jfw and hit the aplication key. If I hear a sound I press down
arrow and hit enter twice to close jaws. Usually it works. However,
sometimes it doesn't. When that happens I usually wait for at least 5
minutes. I know it is anoying having a song playing while your computer is
locked up, but that usually means it is working and it is not completely
frozen. Once thanks for not waiting I crashed so bad my computer that I
    needed to re instal windows.
Clean instal through and through. I lost everything because at the time I
did not backup at all. I learned my leason that's for sure.
