Steve I know I'm a bit late on this one, but you can use HJPad, the tool
used to train users who are new to jfw and word processing. Try creating a
document, and saving it, see if it wants to save as a .doc file. If you
like, we could meet on skype, and we can then try a few things.

word pad use to save files in .doc but in windows xp it started saving them
as rich text format .rtf
