Hi Dave;

Would you please give the details on how to set up the auto announce delay
feature. This is an option that I am totally unaware of. All help will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.
Mike

  Adrian,

I've made a couple adjustments to my auto forms mode:

  1. I've set the auto announce delay to 3 seconds. That means if I use the
navigation letters like e or f I can repeat them until I hear the edit
field I want, then in a reasonable amount of time I hear the chime,
  announcing edit mode.

  2. I changed the chime to something more meaningful to my poor ears.
Ascend.wav for entering and descend.wav for exiting. Much clearer to my
ears
  when I'm in or out.

  3. IN a couple web pages I don't like the auto forms mode, so I use the
personalized settings for those pages and for those pages only, I disable
  auto forms mode.

  Works for me.

  Dave

  Michael,

Forms mode is a little testy in JAWS 10 and 11, but the problems you've
encountered can be overcome. Here are a few tricks.

  1. If unsure I've been put in an edit field or if I'm in the one I want, I
press the up arrow key once and the down arrow once. That usually
accomplishes two things. First, it tells me if I was in forms mode, in
which
case I will be returned to it, as the up beep will indicate. It also
usually
tells me the text preceding the edit field.

  2. If I'm outright confused, I'll press the PC mode key to make sure I'm
out
of forms mode, then press control-home to go to the top of the webpage.
Then
I'll press e for edit to locate the first edit field. If it's the one I
want, a quick up and down arrow will put me in that field. If it isn't,
another press of e will take me to the next edit field, and so on.

  3. Google, which used to be the simplest page for access, has become
quirky
for me. usually, when I open google, I land in the search field, which
JAWS
tells me. But not always. Then I do the second procedure I've outlined
just
  above.

But sometimes, like you, I can't get the Google page to recognize what I
type. The only solution in that case is to reopen Google. Since that's my
home page, I just press alt-home to bring it up.

Other times, the page recognizes what I've typed, but it won't bring up
the
results page. The solution there is to locate the search button under the
edit field and press spacebar, which normally isn't necessary.

FYI, in these examples, I'm using IE8.

Subject: basic question about forms mode

I'm getting along pretty well with Jaws except for using it on the web,
where I just don't seem to be doing things right. Is there any easy way to
know if you're in forms mode or not while in an edit field? Frequently I
go
to a site and you might be thrown into a login section. How do you know if
you can just start typing away
... sometimes when I try to do that, it doesn't type at all and if I
happen to type a b it's looking for a button, or a t would be looking for
a
table, etc. On the other hand if I press enter hoping to get into forms
mode, sometimes it turns out I'm already in forms mode so pressing enter
executes my blank edit field and takes me to the next screen. So is there
any way I can find out from Jaws before trying to type if I'm currently in
  forms mode or not?

Another question I have is sometimes I'm in an edit field and feel stuck
because typing does nothing but pressing enter also does nothing. An
example
of when this happens to me is in Google, an initial search works fine but
when I bring the cursor up to the edit field at the top of the screen to
do
a second search I can't type anything in or get into forms mode by
pressing
enter. A friend of mine said I should press the plus key on the numpad,
then
press enter, but that doesn't work for me in this situation. It appears
Jaws
has put me at the end of the Google edit field and I can backspace
characters to delete them but I can't type in new ones. When I am stuck
like
this if you can believe it I am actually turning Jaws off so I can type,
then turning Jaws back on to hear the results from Google, and I can't
tell
you how dumb this makes me feel.

I am using Jaws 10 with XP.
