avi to mpg converter

Hi List:
I have a bunch of movies in avi format which I would like to play on my DVD
player. Do any of you know of a Jaws accessible converter for making them
into mpg format for instance? Before I purchase one, I would like to know
it is Jaws accessible and not make the same mistake of purchasing something
which turned out to be too graphic. Thanks.
