Hey, Michael!
Well, I just made the switch from Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition to
AVG AntiVirus, and I couldn't be happier about it! <smile> I made the
switch, because my UPS (universal power supply) has auto-shutdown software
that I wanted to install, but in the installation notes, it said that it
wasn't compatible with Norton AntiVirus, because of a known problem with
Norton. Actually, that was only the last in a long list of gripes with
Norton... I found Norton to be not very "blind-user friendly," if you know
what I mean.
AVG scans my system promptly at 8:00 every morning, which is more than I
used to scan it, because of doing the scans manually with Norton and
dreading the procedure so badly. AVG also downloads the updates each and
every day, and I have found it to be very user-friendly, and in the end, you
just cannot beat free, as long as the protection is adequate, right?
As for firewalls, I use the free version of Sygate Personal Firewall,
and although it can be a pain at first, I have never had a problem in over
two and a half years now. Pretty much any firewall is going to be a pain at
first, if it monitors outgoing traffic, so the initial process of telling it
what is okay to pass through it, and what is not, is going to just be part
of the process, no matter what.
With all of that said, I would also recommend that you install a custom
hosts file, which has almost single-handedly saved my butt from all kinds of
spy ware. In fact, I have only had about thirty pieces of spy ware over the
last year and a half or so, and I have friends who do scans each and every
day, and have half a dozen or so to deal with. By the way, none of those
thirty pieces of spy ware were malicious, if that is important to you.
<smile> If you need to read up on the subject, I can recommend a couple of
sites, including the site where I obtained my custom hosts file free of
charge.
To read up on the subject from a nationally recognized computer goddess,
go here:
http://www.komando.com
You may just want to do a Google search on the Komando.com web site for
the words "custom hosts file," because her search engine is kind of quirky
in my opinion. To further read up on the subject, and to download your own
custom hosts file free of charge, go here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me
privately... I am no expert, and installing the hosts file is not that
difficult, but in case you have questions, you can find me here:

Good luck and have fun!
Billy

Subject: avg virus and jfw
Hi all, I am considering switching from Norton anti virus to a v g
virus, as I understand there is a free addition, and they don't soak
you for subscription updates to get virus definitions. I know there has
been talk on the list about the program before, but I would like to open
discussions again and ask how well jfw works with it, and how users of
it like it. Also I am looking for some fire wall soft ware suggestions,
as I am using Norton internet security and am not to happy with that
either.
