No problem, I was trying to be extra clear since you weren't able to get the
task accomplished. I'm glad it's working for you now.

Rick,

First, let me say thanks at this point. God knows I don't want to get flamed
for being too upset or something, and ungrateful on top of that!

No, seriously, first of all, I hope you understand I was not confused about
how to launch the interface, where to find the Advanced Options menu, not
that stuff. You know, yes? Just checking.

But here's what no one said specifically until this email from you. And that
is, arrow down until you get to that email category, and then *switch* to
the tab key to find my way through the contents of that section (or folder,
if that's what it truly is). As I'm sure you can imagine, I just couldn't
figure this out. Because if it is indeed a tree view, as some of what it
says makes it sound like, it can't be traversed by just the arrow key, right
arrowing to open a folder, then tabbing into the files list view (so to
speak) and then arrowing down again. This combo of getting there with the
arrow key but then tabbing into the subfolder and then arrowing again, if
that's what I did (I'm getting burned out at this point and don't remember),
then it's more like this FTP site I'm familiar with that's set up like a
Windows Explorer window but has to be navigated more like what you say here
to do.

Well, I don't know if that's clear. As I say, I'm gburned out and a little
confused. but it made all the difference to be told to arrow down at first,
and then to switch to the tab key. Because then the list of items I was told
to look for finally appeared! And of course I unchecked the certify item and
that was that.

But you know something? Earlier, I was poking around the same Advanced
Options menu with the Jaws cursor, and it revealed an entirely different set
of items that included options for checking or unchecking all sorts of task
tray bubble notices and whatnot. And none of that appears when I navigate in
this way. I am going to ask the next friend (sighted variety, that is) who
stops by to just look at that baby and tell me what they see. I'll bet it's
some sort of three-level menu structure or something, and I'd have to be a
wizard to figure out how to access all of it dependably with Jaws. Which,
thank goodness, I don't have to do if I'm fine with most of the default
settings and just wanted to turn off the damn certification.

Whew! That wasn't fun. But you were persistent enough to finally mention
switching from arrow key to tab key! Whew. Thanks much. I think AVG and I
are going to get along fine now.

Bring up AVG 8 either from the desktop orthe from the system tray. Ppress
the Alt key to get to the tools menu and then arrowdown to advanced settings
and press enter you will have a tree. In this tree arrow down to email
scanning and tab until you hear the certification check boxes and hit your
space bar on them to uncheck them and then tab to enter and press space bar
again. Then Alt F4 out of the AVG control panel.

Rick,

I've been trying to do exactly this for several tries. But I can't find an
actual control for unchecking certification, though I once found it while e
blundering around this menu using the Jaws cursor, but that was really
random and pretty crazy. Let me paste in what I am seeing in the menu. If it
copies properly here, maybe you can see what I may be misunderstanding about
the menu.

*  *  *

Appearance
Maintenance
Virus Vault
PUP Exceptions
LinkScanner
Scans
Schedules
E-mail Scanner
Certification

--This is what my Virtualize function managed to capture. But when I look at
it for readl, here's what it looks like:

Email scanning 0 Email scanner opened4 items
Incoming Email 1 certification scanner open 0 items

Now if I alt tagbb out of there and come back, sometimes those lines read
differently as if they've been shuffled a little. And if I switch the Jaws
cursor and examine those ssame lines, they display different stuff that is
just too much to keep memorizing and typing in here.

But you see, it isn't very simple, at least not what I'm getting. Any ideas?

It's very simple. Goto tools menu and down to advanced settings press
enter. then in the tree arrow down to email scanning. Tab to the
certification boxes and uncheck them Tab to ok and press enter.

No jaws cursor is necessary at all.

And how do you access the tools/advanced settings/appearance submenu in
order to turn off the certification notice and do whatever is necessary to
stop emails you receive from showing an attachments symbol when they have no
actual attachments? I somehow managed to stop this behavior in AVG's 7.5,
but now it's returned in version 8 and, unlike in 7.5, I can't figure out
how to stop it happening. The submenu that I think might be critical to this
effort has to be approached by using the Jaws cursor to even be blimpsed,
and even then it's not easy (okay, for me impossible) to to figure out how
to check or uncheck whatever in order to clean up this very annoying
problem.

Thanks.
