On the recommendation of another person on the list, I bought OmniPage 17 when it was being offered at $99. I don't know if that offer is still in effect.


It makes OCR operations extremely simple:

1. Place focus on the document.

2. Press the applications key and arrow down to the OmniPage submenu. Press enter.

3. You are presented with several format choices, including Word, RTF, TXT and more. Select and press enter.

4. OmniPage performs OCR and creates a new document with the appropriate file extension in the same folder.

Note that I haven't used OmniPage with a scanner.

That empty PDF document probably contains text in a graphic, which JFW and Adobe Acrobat Reader cannot access. If you have an OCR program, you can open the PDF file with it and convert the graphical text into accessible text.
