about scripting

hi all
I'm new to the list and am attempting to write scripts for a completely
unsupported piece of software and am finding that the basics of scripting and
the fsdn just are not telling me what I need to know. is there any other
documentation of the scripting language or a reference of any kind that has
hmm, better descriptions of how the functions are to be used and, well just
more data on the scripting is what I'm after.
