Works or Office XP?

Hi folks.
I have JFW 5.00844 Windows XP, and went with MS Works XP because it's
significantly cheaper than Office. I really just needed Word, so at the
time it was the right decision.
However, now that I have a need for simple spreadsheets, mostly to do with
home finances, I'm wondering if Works is as accessible or less accessible
than Excel?
Is anybody else here using Works instead of the fullblown Office product?
Also, I'm going to get MS Outlook soon, since it can sync with my
BrailleNote for contacts and calendar info. Should I spring for Office or
just Outlook?
