Judith,

The format painter is just a way to save time. If you've formatted a chunk of text, paragraph, several words etc., exactly the way you want them and then you need additional text somewhere else in the document formatted exactly the same way, the format painter allows you to grab just the formatting, and not the characters, of a chunk of selected text and essentially hold it in a "special" clipboard until you decide where you need it painted. If I remember correctly it doesn't effect the normal Windows clipboard. So while you are editing text and deciding where you need the formatting painted you can still be copying and pasting with the usual commands. When you are ready to paste the formatting that you grabbed with CTRL+SHIFT+C, you can then paste it with CTRL+SHIFT+V. It really does save time when you want something formatted the same way in various places in the same, or another document. It also comes in handy for grabbing the formatting that someone else put in a document so that you can use it later somewhere else.
I hope that helps.

I will be more than happy to share any tips and tricks I tend to learn. The first tip I learned is that wit the text selected you can press control and space bar to remove all formatting to the selected text. For example, if you have a word that you have underlined, bolded and italicized and you no longer want any of those formatting attributes to apply. You can simply select the text and press control space bar and the formatting attributes will be removed.

Thanks for that information. The format painter is located in the formatting toolbar so I figured it was not accessible with JAWS, but I am glad there is a keyboard alternative for this feature. thanks again. This will be very helpful as I continue in this course.

Alicia,

To copy the formatting of text in MS Word, CTRL+SHIFT+C is used. When you want to paste that formatting to another chunk of selected text press CTRL+SHIFT+V. That is the keyboard method for dealing with the format painter buttons on the toolbar in MS Word.

    Hello, Everyone:
I am enrolled in a Word class this semester and one of the tasks
we are expected to know how to do is use the format painter. Does
anyone know if the format painter is available with JAWS 6 or
later? The instructor seems to be emphasizing this format painter
as if we will be using it a lot in our course work and I want to
make sure it is accessible before I even attempt to use it or tell the instructor it isn't. Thanks for any information you can give me.
