Thanks for the pointer, but I don't use Norton, and I'm not having a problem 
with Word.  Hope the other person sees this suggestion, though.

There is a Microsoft Office plug in in Norton Anti Virus. When it is enabled
it causes all sorts of weird problems. Go to Options in Norton and use the
Jaws cursor to find miscellaneous and click on it you will find the plug in
switch there. Disable it.
