Thanks for the kind words, Rodney, and good luck with everything. The great thing about a list like this is that we can all help each other, so the good karma goes around and around and nourishes our souls as much as it enriches
our skills. Hope your holidays are warm and that the New year brings good
health and lots of satisfactions.

Yardbird, you seem like a really nice person. Best of luck with your
writing career. I have considered doing some writing too. We all need
people who are technically oriented to help us because we are so dependent
on the computer to access information etc.

Hi Rodney,

thanks for being understanding about the name thing. I know that the
handle
sometimes confuses people especially if they're using a screen reader and
hear it spoken in the JFW Say All mode, and then try to imagine how it's
written. But this handle was the nickname of the famous jazz alto sax
player Charlie parker (whom fans and friends called "Bird," for short),
and
the Sixties English rock group The Yardbirds used the name as a tribute.
I'm not a professional musician, although I do play a couple of
instruments,
including saxophone, but I'm a devoted jazz fan and that's how I picked
the
handle for myself when I established this email account.

As far as work goes, I'm afraid I can't say anything very helpful. first
of
all, there seem to be a number of folks on this list who have it all over
me, in terms of technical expertise. And my own kind of work is very
different. I'm a writer, formerly a feature writer for a Hollywood film
industry magazine, and now working exclusively on essays and other
literary
projects. What I've learned about computers and screen readers owes a lot
to having lost enough sight so that I had to start using Jaws, and then
learned a lot from people on lists like this one. So I'm more the student
than the teacher. And when things really get difficult, one of my best
friends is an I T professional, and he helps me out of a lot of serious
jams.

But I hope if you ask around on these lists, someone can help you figure
out
some ways in which to help your friend in his or her search for good
employment. Best of luck with that, and good for you just for trying to
network around and get some advice.

Okay, Yardbird. I apologize for not reading your message more carefully
and
for capitalizing your screen-name incorrectly.
How do you use your familiarity with Jaws to make a living?
Do you work with computers to provide tech support or something like that?
The reason that I am asking this is that I have a friend who has your
level
of knowledge when it comes to using Jaws effectively. He is a great
computer user, but he has had a difficult time finding his nitch in the
world of work.

Hello Rodney,

It seems you misunderstood a couple of things in my message. Let me ttry
again. What I asked was if anyone happened to know whether FS will be
closed
from Christmas through New Year's. If you don't know, that's fine.
Sorry
if something I asked in my message wasn't clear. Also, I use only Jaws
as
a
screen reader. If you reread my message, I hope you'll see that I didn't
say I was subscribed to a Window Eyes list, if that's what you thought.
So
I can't advise you about that product, sorry.

last, unless you're just trying to be funny, the handle is Yardbird, one
single word. It's an old traditional nickname you may not be familiar
with.
It isn't a first and last name, nor is it a high tech product name with a
capital in the middle of it. I hope that's more clear.

Holiday best to you and yours,
yardbird

YardBird:
You seem to be very knowledgeable about Jaws, Freedom Scientific etc.
But you seem to have a great deal of time on your hands to post to lists
etc. What type of work do you do as a profession? How do you use Jaws
with
this type of work? Also, you might want to write me off-list about the
second question in my email message.
Do you think that I should consider purchasing Windoweyes? If so, why?

I hope that the employees at Freedom Scientific and GW Micro enjoy their
vacations, if they get some time off for the holidays.
I also hope that everyone on the list has a nice holiday.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi,

I just heard on another list that GW Micro (Window eyes) is going to be
closed all next week, from Christmas through New Year's. Does anyone
know
if Freedom Scientific is planning to do the same thing? If so, I'd
better
order my SMA renewal before Friday to get it at the reduced price, even
though I'm in a snit for the moment because their Jaws 8 shipment has
failed
to reach me all the way until now. Just feeling too annoyed to pony up
more
money while they screw around delivering what I've already paid for.
And
with reportedly chintzy, insecure packaging, at that.

Anybody happen to know?
