You're right about that. I guess that's why burning packages can so readily use them. I'm not sure about sampling rates for them, though. I thought about doing some sound clips for use on a recent CD anthology, but abandoned the idea when I discovered Sound Recorder could only do mono. Nonetheless, working on that project showed me how easy it would be to add WAV files, a lesson I will one day apply. I thought the file type of a commercial CD music track was .wav, not what you give below, which sounds more like a standard than a file type. However, assuming you're more knowledgeable than I am in this area, please reconsider my question, in any case. so far as I was aware , .wav is certainly what I believe they call a "lossless" file type for music recording, completely or nearly uncompressed. And is not typically used for putting music on an IPod. Isn't this much correct? In other words, please respond to the question at the heart of my inquiry. Are people saying "wav when they really mean "wma, which sounds more normal, paired with .mp3, as I explained? Both being high-compression file types? Thanks. hcih Which is, so far . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)" <Ted.Lisle@xxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2007 9:00 AM Subject: RE: What is Text Aloud The technique used for commercial audio CD's is PCM--pulse code modulation. I believe Sonic (and probably others) can directly import and convert WAV files for use on a CD anthology (I think even humble Sound recorder can as well), but imagine there's some conversion involved. The de facto CD standard is 16 bits at a sampling rate of 44.1kHz. But meantime, I've been noticing something in the explanations about Text Aloud that puzzles me. Everyone is in agreement in saying that the program enables you to convert text files into audio format-- presumably for putting on a mobile device like an IPod, yes?-- and they all mention two audio formats as available alternatives. But some people say those two alternataives are .mp3 and .wma (windows media audio), which sounds pretty normal in this context, because both involve a great deal of compression, so that encoded files are space-saving on the mobile device. But below, and in other posts lately, some are saying that the second format is *.wav,* which is a big difference, although it, too, begins with a w, if that's maybe the source of some confusion. A .wav file is the full-size audio format file type that is what's used to produce a commercial music CD, and this isn't a format often used for packing mobile devices with music or recorded speech. But maybe I'm missing something? If this isn't being said by mistake, please say. Thanks. Always interested to learn. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Renette Bloem" <renette@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2007 8:22 AM Subject: RE: What is Text Aloud Stacey The cost is $30.
