Steve,

I tried to learn to use your description of the extended search options in
the Word Find function, but ran into a snag. Maybe you can advise me.

I don't have any highlighted text in a document. But I do sometimes
italicize words or phrases to be in accordance with certain typographical
conventions, such as when you're using foreign words or giving the title of
a book. Often, while proofreading a document, I have wished I could isolate
just those places where I've used italics, and check them to make sure that
I hadn't allowed the italicization to be overextended and run on into
neighboring text, as can happen when you can't see what you're doing and you
make a mistake with this.

So, I put up the Find dialogue, tabbed until I heard "more," pressed Enter,
and poked around. When I tabbed through the menu list there-- it seems you
can tab or arrow through it-- I came to Format. So I pressed Enter on
Format, then arrowed through the list of options to search for.

I found all the items I expected, including highlights, as you mentioned.
And then I came upon Format, the one I wanted. I pressed enter to open that
submenu (it seems you can open it with an arrow key, too) then explored what
was in it. Style, Language, frames, highlights, etc. When I came to font,
which is where I supposed I'd find a feature like italics or bold, I hit
enter. And then Jaws went dead. I couldn't make anything speak with Insert
5 for whatever word I might be on, or Insert 7 to see if I was on a control,
or Insert E for the same purpose. I arrowed up and down, back and forth,
nothing. I had to escape the Find dialogue completely in order to recover
speech, and in the process, the first time around (I ran through this twice
before writing in), I accidentally exited Word because I still saw what
looked like the dialogue on the screen and I couldn't escape it, so I
pressed Alt F4.

Well, so much for my Jaws skills in this task. Do you have any idea how I
could have found my way to a command to search for italicized text?

thanks.
ialgoue uttoniother .edit box that announced itself as a combo box, so I
tabbed to "more," more and , and I was imagining that might be where .

Heidi,

I don't know if you can get JAWS to do this, but you can get Word to do
it. I've got JAWS 6.2 and Word 2000 and 2003, but I'm fairly sure the
following will work for your setup too.

From the top of the document, press Control + F to open the Find
dialogue. Tab to the More button and press it to add more controls to
the dialogue. Then Tab to the Format button menu and press it to open a
menu. DownArrow to Highlight and press it. You've now set Word to search
for the next highlighted text. Tab to and press the Find Next button to
select the next instance of highlighted text. Press Escape to close the
Find dialogue and you should find that JAWS reads the selected text.
Press LeftArrow to deselect the found text and leave the cursor on the
first letter.

You can now use Control + PageDown and Control + PageUp to move between
the areas of highlighted text until you close Word or change the
settings of the Find dialogue.

Subject: How Do I Jump to & Read Highlighted Colored Text in Word?

Hello JFW List,

The author of a very long Word document highlighted her changes in
yellow.

I know that insert-f will tell the font and character attributes, but I
don't want to read through the entire document line by line just to find
the highlighted parts.

Is there any way for JAWS to jump to and read the text she highlighted
in yellow?

Thank you.

Heidi
