Note. From what I can tell, my message didn't reach the list last night. I'm trying again, and apologize if others did receive it already.

Tom,

I've been watching this thread with interest, if only because I'm missing something important. It would be extremely annoying to have spaces announced when reading a document for comprehension. Although I work mainly in WordPerfect, I have some experience in Word. I am unaware of spaces being announced in either program. So, are you referring to a setting?

Some points I can address:

1. To justify is to make the left or right margins, or both, a straight line. If left or right justification is on, to make the margin even, letters and spaces on a line will be stretched out or shortened to meet the spatial requirement.

2. People who learned to type before the advent of computers were taught to press the spacebar twice between sentences, presumably to highlight visually the switch to the next sentence. Both MS Word and WordPerfect theoretically make the formatting adjustment so that only one space is required. I say "theoretically" because WordPerfect won't allow you to copy or move a sentence unless it has two spaces before and after. I don't know if this sentence parameter applies to MS Word.

So, again, how are you getting MS Word to announce spaces at all? Maybe that answer will lead to a solution of the problem.

Hi Pat, I am not sure what justified the text means, but I am pretty sure the author did hit his space bar twice between certain words as I just did now. I called FS and they did not have any ideas. One techie said I should run repair, and another offered some maybe help, but the solutions they were offering went against my own computer related Hippocratic oath of first do no harm lol Maybe I will just have to live with jaws saying two spaces every time any text file has two spaces instead of one. Thanks, Tom
