Blake,
all I'm saying is that I don't get into these situations, plus that Jaws,
even though running as a service, doesn't say didly to me on boot-up,
Restart and shutdown. Sorry. It's just how it works on my system. I don't
know how it's disadvantaged me, if at all. Thanks. I'm sure it's a great and
useful strategy for many others.

When you have JAWS running as a service, you can logoff and it will keep
speaking at the welcome screen. Also, JAWS works when you lock the computer
with the windows plus l hotkey. If JAWS isn't ran as a service, however,
JAWS becomes unresponsive and you must pull up narrator or guess what
control you're on.

Hi all,

At this point, I have to confess that I've been taking some of these
assertions on faith. I'm not arguing that Jaws may not load more quickly,
once initiated, as a service, but to be honest, if I start it from a hotkey
when it's been turned off, or when I haven't yet checked the option for it
to load automatically, it takes mere seconds. I don't see where that needs
to be speeded up, not so far as I can tell. Is the gain in speed measured in
milliseconds? No objection if someone appreciates that; I'm just saying that
loading manually never seems slow to me.

Also, even with Jaws running as a service, which I have it doing, it speaks
nothing at all on startup until it announces that it's ready, and then it
speaks whatever icon it finds itself focused on on my Desktop. So I don't
get this part of the claim to it speaking more on startup.

Similarly, when I restart Windows or shut down my computer, Jaws says
nothing before or after the Windows shutdown melody except for the one word,
"unavailable," for some reason. That's it. So all in all, I'm having it run
on startup for convenience, so I don't have to wait until I'm sure the
machine's fully booted up to launch it, and that's about it.

All that said, still I made that modification to the startup instructions in
Properties because several of you who seem a lot more knowledgeable and
astute about this stuff than I said it was an advantageous thing to do, and
couldn't hurt. I say all this in perfectly good humor.

That's correct Don, JAWS will load sooner when started as a service
rather than an application.
