When my speech went away, I heard the Windows load tones however, I couldn't
get Narrator to work and I decided on girlfriend 2.0 as an alternative.

  Mike,

Eloquence uses the wave output, just as your computer sounds do. I suspect
that if you can hear the computer sounds then it is not muted and therefore not
your problem.

What is the default synthesizer JAWS is using on startup?

Have you tried the Ins+Ctrl+s to change to SAPI 5 speech to see if Microsoft
Sam comes up?

Larry, do you remember which one was muted?

      Mike,

I had that happen to me and I had to get a sighted person to go in to the
windows volume controls and uncheck a muted check box.

The computer sounds are there, but jaws is not. It comes up fine, on the
screen. That is, sighted people can see it, but I just can't hear it. As for
running jaws first, i have that disabled, so it won't come up when my daughter
starts it up.

Do you have any sounds coming out of the speakers?

Maybe the volume has been muted.

Hi folks. I've encountered a very weird problem with jaws. I'be been
using jaws version 8.0 on my daughter's computer, but for some reason, now,
when it comes up, no speech at all. I've looked at the settings, and as far as
I can tell, it seems to be right. I've tried reinstalling 8.0, but it won't
let me do that, giving me a message asking for my authorization disk. The
authorization is up to date on there. Anyone ever had such a problem as this?
