David,
I don't understand what you're talking about.  First of all, I use Jaws 6. 
Sorry to have confused you.  What are you talking about, opening an email 
message and hearing "read only, edit?"  I don't hear anything like that when 
I open an email message.  Also, why are you saying that you turn it off, and 
yet it still speaks, and you feel better?  As I said, are you aware that I'm 
talking about an edit field in the spell checker?
