Mark
I managed to get this feature working using Jaws7.1 on Excel 2003 but it
works in the same way as the Jaws verbosity method having been set to
read both row and column titles. Do you know how to limit the feature
to reading row titles only or column titles only as you navigate the
document?

Cheers
Chris

I believe that it works for all Excel programs going back to Excel 2000.
I'm not positive what version of Jaws started working with this, but I
believe it was Jaws 7.

Mark
Does this functionality exist in earlier versions of Excel?

Dave, there are few differences between using the Verbosity Menu versus
the
Define Names function. The most notable one is that by actually
inserting a
defined name, you are making the Excel spreadsheet accessible for
everyone.
I teach some accessibility courses to public organizations, and I
encourage
everyone to use this method. This way, visually impaired folks who are
not
that knowledgeable with Jaws verbosity options who end up using the
spreadsheet will find it easy to navigate. Second, I find it much
easier
than using the verbosity menu when a spreadsheet has various regions.
Third, I have had several instances where I could not get the Verbosity
menu
method to work; and after talking with Freedom Scientific support about
it I
was told that there are some bugs and they encouraged me to use Defined
Names when in doubt.

Thanks!

Mark,

Why not just use the JAWS verbosity menu and set column and row titles
for
the selected cell(s)? I do that all the time, and the stetting are
usually
saved in the JSI file unique to that spreadsheet.

By the way, the steps for getting Jaws to read your titles for you in
Excel
2007 is as follows...

1. Find the row that contains the titles.
2. Place your cursor at the first cell in that row.
3. Next, we Define the Name of this cell as a Title.
4. Type Alt+M to go the Formulas tab.
5. Type M again to open the Define Name menu, and hit D to select it.
6. In the Name field, type in "Title" and hit Enter.
7. Now, as you move around the data, you should hear the column and row
title first, then the cell content.

Thank you! Laughs I may come whining to you about more in future. You've
helped a great deal. I'll try that title thing, Mark. Thanks so much.
