Sound Recorder with Jaws 6

Hi all

got Windows xp and am trying to best a mic.

I go to start, control panel entertainment and sound recorder.

how do I no if the buttons are pressed.  Do I press Enter or space bar for it 
to start taping.

Can anyone help?
