Hello listers,

In a previous post, I asked if anybody knew of a way to access NTFS files
from a DOS boot disk which includes JAWS for DOS. Someone suggested a free
utility called NTFSDOS, but it only allows read-only access.

I did some searching on the web, and found a free and JAWS-friendly
solution, which allows read/write access to NTFS files from a DOS boot disk.

The utility is called readerNTFS.EXE, and can be downloaded from
www.ntfs.com.

Look for the "NTFSFloppySetup.exe" link to download an executable file which
will install readerNTFS.EXE and several useful utilities to a diskette.

After you have run NtfsFloppySetup.exe to create the utilities diskette, you
can simply copy the "ReaderNTFS.exe" file from the diskette, and copy it to
a DOS boot diskette, which includes JAWS for DOS.

Setting up a DOS boot disk which contains a stripped-down copy of JAWS for
DOS and a copy of ReaderNTFS.exe will enable you to do trouble-shooting,
backup, file recovery and other tasks from a DOS boot diskette, which can
not normally be done on hard drives that use the NTFS file system used by
Windows NT, XP, or Win 2000.

NTFS files can be accessed from a DOS window, but if Windows is screwed up,
you are out of luck. This gives JAWS users a workable alternative.

In a separate message, I'll be posting step-by-step instructions for
creating a DOS boot disk which contains JAWS for DOS.

(Important note: You must have a hardware speech synthesizer in order to use
JAWS for DOS. Windows-based software speech synthesizers will not work in a
DOS-only environment.)
