I know. I too know that the settings you make with insert V are only
temporary,
but for some reason, that's not the case here. It will keep the choices you
make until you manually change them again. Not sure what the difference is
with
making Verbosity setting changes in Word that it will keep them permanently.

Interesting, Jack. So far as I've learned about that on-the-by Insert V
menu, all the adjustments you make on its menu are meant only to hold for as
long as you're in that session with that application. Interesting. I'll
look through that Insert V menu for clues to other such anomalies. But the
menu is generally meant to allow only temporary adjustments.

Hi Daniel,

Well, I went to my MS Word program and then hit insert V.
I arrowed down once to smart tags and turned them off with the space bar.
Tabbed once to close and hit enter. Jaws then announced that it saved my
changes.
Well, I wanted to test your theory that this was a temporary fix. So, I
completely restarted the computer, and went back into the MS Word program.
The
verbosity setting to turn smart tags off was still turned off. So, in
short,
This will shut off Jaws reading smart tags in MS Word for good until you
turn
that feature back on. It's not temporary. Jack

Jack,

I'd just like to remind you that this solution is only a temporary one and
that the solution Francis Daniels so painstakingly gave the steps for is the
way to stop smart tags from being created even though you don't wish them
to. Personally, I'd go with that, unless I had reason to believe that I
might eventually study the uses of smart tags and begin creating them
purposefully. But I don't personally think that's going to happen for me,
and so simply turning them off altogether seems the best solution.

By the way, I'm not sure if there's a corresponding setting you can make
permanently in Jaws configuration manager to stop Jaws speaking smart tags.
This would allow Word to keep creating smart tags whether you wanted them or
not, but Jaws wouldn't speak them unless you turned the smart tag speaking
back on.

Butt, I don't know where that might be in the configuration menu. And I
personally think Francis's solution is by far the one to be preferred, for
most users.

Did you know that under the insert V in MS word you can tell Jaws to
stop reading smart tags, it is the first or second option, once you
change it and press enter the saving is maintained until you change it
again.

You will need to go to the Format pull-down menu with Alt O. Then go to
Auto format with the letter A. Press tab to get to the Options button
and then press it with Enter or space bar.

Press Control Tab once to get to the Smart tags page. The dialog box is
now labeled AutoCorrect, but it's where you need to be. The first
option is called "Label text with smart tags. It will be checked.
Press space bar to uncheck it. Press tab to get to the next check box,
labeled "Show smart tag action buttons." Make sure this check box is
not checked. Press tab to get to the OK button, and press Enter. Exit
the dialog box by tabbing to the Close button.

okay, I did this, and, I'm still hearing "Smart Tag", in some of my
documents. so, I took 1 more step.

1, open a Microsoft document, where your hearing "Smart Tag"
2, alt O, for the pull down menu,

3, A for auto format,
4, tab options, press enter,
5, ctrl tab to the smart tags page,
6, tab to, remove "Smart tags, press enter,
7, you will hear, "Microsoft Office Word
This will remove all smart tags, including smart tags labeled by
recognizers you may no longer have and smart tags recognized in a
document opened on someone else's computer. You cannot undo this action.
Do you want to continue? Yes No" 8, press enter. 9, press enter. 10, tab
and enter on okay. your now placed back in your current document. now
alt f4, and say yes to changes. reopen the document, you will not hear,
"Smart Tags.

Hi All,

OK, I'm using Office Pro 2002, and I'm fighting with MS Word. In the
options/view tab, there is a place to check or uncheck the smart tags.
So, I unchecked it, and it still says smart tag. So, what's the point
in being able to uncheck something if it won't go away? Any ideas?
