Hi Grant,
once you answer the call, try moving to the contacts tab with either the
combination control+tab followed by a single tab key, or experiment with the
combination till you get there. I don't know if you are using scripts, cause
there is a combination that lets you switch tabs instantly.
A friend of mine had this problem during conference calls, his system virtually
locked up, and JAWS would take ages to react to a keystroke.
