Press the Windows Key.  When the start menu appears, type r, which will
open the "run" dialog box.  At this point, type command (I think CMD
might also work).  What you're really doing is invoking a DOS
prompt--the same command line prompt we've known since the 1980's.

You could always try a good old DOS trick.  Go to the command prompt and
type "CHKDSK."  this is primarily a diagnostic tool--a rather useful one
with the right switches.  For several years it was eclipsed by Scandisk,
but has reemerged.  Anyhow, it always reads used and available space.
