When you are creating (or modifying) message (mail) rules you are placed in the "Message Rules" dialog where there four steps to be taken to create/modify a rule. Step 1 is the "Select Criteria" step and is a multiple-select list, arrow down (or up) this list and check any criterion you wish to employ to trigger action for this rule. Step 2 is similar except that you are selecting the action to be taken. You might not know if you have "checked" any of the criterion and/or actions if JAWS does not read the "checked" attribute but just assume the space bar has done the job and move onto step 3. Step 3, here's where you really create the rule. When you come to this step it is not at all clear for a blind user to know what must be done. Arrow down, the first line(s) you come to should be the criteria/criterion you selected -- if none of the criteria lines appear in the Step 3 list go back to Step 1 and try "checking" the desired criterion once again and return back here upon doing that. As you arrow to the "bottom" of the list in Step 3 you should notice the "'"Action" selection(s) you've checked; again, if none appear go back to Step 2, select the desired action(s) and come back to Step 3 upon completing that. The trick in Step 3 is to make sure the desired criterion and actions are in this list and unwanted criterion and/or actions are not. Arrow up and down this list initially verifying that what is there is what you want. Then, hit the <RETURN>/<ENTER> key when on those items that need additional data (i.e., "Where the subject line contains people" requires information for "people" and "Move to the specified folder" needs you to identify that folder) Step 4 is to name the rule -- I recommend you name the rule so as to readily recognize the chief intention of the rule, for example I have a message rule to intercept messages from this list and move it to a "JFW List" folder named "JFW List Rule." Then, of course, you need to select the OK button. If you have messages to which the new rule can be applied you can test it by activating the "Apply Now" button in the main Message Rule dialog -- it is easier if the messages are sitting in your InBox, but with a little manipulation this does not have to be the case.
